Redirected Data "Moves" from One Server to Another - Part 5

In "Changing Server Name in Folder Redirection the Wrong Way - Part 2 (http://www.adshotgyan.com/2012/06/changing-server-name-in-folder.html)" post, we saw that changing the server name in Folder Redirection Policy is not the ideal way of making that change.

In this post, I would like to show one more aspect of the change... Be it right or wrong is not a concern here at this time. What I want to stress upon is that when we move the data from local profile to the network location or from one server to another or from the network location back to the local profiles, In all the cases the data MOVES from one location to another. The data is NOT COPIED... So while making any such change, its very important to remember the fact that the data will be moved...
The Lab...

OU  (IT)   (IT_Admin)

A Group Policy Object is Linked with the OU "IT"

And the Folder Redirection Settings are all Set...

The policy is getting applied as well on the client machines...

And the data is getting saved on the Network Location "OldServer"

Let`s make the same change... Changing the name of the server from OldServer to NewServer

The changed happened on the client machine and the files are now pointing to the NewServer... Remember, In some cases the file may point to the new location while in other they may point to the old location... This will create inconsistency in data so it is not recommended to change the name of the server directly...

See... The data is no longer present on the OldServer... It has been moved to the NewServer

Now this is a very interesting point... If you look on to the NewServer, the only data that has moved is the file. The folders "Docs" and "PDFs" have not moved... Neither they are at the OldServer... This is scary...

But one point to check is the location of the Folder.... It is pointing to the NewServer

Lets go in to the properties of this folder and choose the "Offline Files" Tab... It clearly says that this folder is not synced at the NewServer location and gives you an option to Sync the Folder

The moment you click on "Sync Now", the Red Cross is gone...

And that the main change.. The folder is now replicated on to the Network Location "NewServer"

Finally, Summarizing it again... The data which was present on the OldServer is no longer available there... It has been MOVED to the new location "NewServer"
